Here's the official announcement about Alchemist trade:

New trade available in the Artisans’ Village – learn the art of alchemy

Howdy Farmers,
More excitement awaits you in the Artisans’ Village from level 70 and up – unlock the latest trade “Alchemist” from the Tree of Wisdom.

To become an alchemist, the first things you’ll have to do is pass the exam quest in the Farmers’ Society and collect as many mandrake plants as possible which appear on your fields while harvesting.

As soon as you have your mystical building, you can begin testing out your alchemistic skills.

Just remember this one thing about the alchemist trade: Every recipe will only produce a basic product at first which won’t give you any kind of bonus on its own.
In every trade level, there’s a special recipe to create a gnome.This gnome can then be combined with another basic product of the same level to be transformed into something special – a garden gnome who once you put on your field will have a special effect on your crops.
Your trade level will influence the number of gnomes you can put on your fields.
There’s so much to learn, so don’t just stand there, get started soon – combine the apprentice gnome with mandrake powder and watch him work his magic on your grain crops.
